From the Superintendent of Schools

Frances M. McArthur, Ph.D. Lexington ISD

As we work towards developing a mind set in Lexington students about the necessity of post-secondary degrees, we have begun offering our students exposure to college entrance exams. Next week, October 24th – 27th, Lexington ISD will offer the ReadiStep exam to all of our eighth grade students during first period. ReadiStep is a middle school assessment that measures skills students need to be on track for college success. It provides insight into students’ academic progress and also equips educators with tools they can use to make informed decisions in the classroom. Once they enter high school, our students will be taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Exam (PSAT/NMSQT) and SAT. Last year, we formed a partnership with the College Board, so that our Lexington students could take the exam for free. Increasing our students’ exposure to a test that assesses the same skills, covers the same subjects, and uses the same question format as both the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT is important in demystifying college entrance exams that seem daunting to many of our students, and that act as gatekeepers to many of the colleges our students aspire to attend.
