Sheriff’s Department Investigates Questionable Death
Lee County Sheriff ’s Department is investigating the questionable death of a victim found 3.7 miles east of Giddings Monday morning shortly after 11. The body of Darren Roberts, 39 from Spring, which is near Houston, was found in the ditch along Highway 290. He was found near his truck, which was parked on the side of the road facing west.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported that they received a call at 11:19 a.m. regarding a white 2002 Dodge four-door vehicle parked on the side of the road. The caller also reported that it looked like a body was lying in the ditch.
Lee County Sheriff Rodney Meyer, along with Captain Adam Gonzales and Deputies Mike York and Steven Skinner arrived at the scene. B & M Ambulance also arrived and it was determined that the victim was deceased. A small caliber hand gun was found near the body.
Roberts may have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, although verification of that fact will come from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office where the body was taken by Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home for an autopsy.
Sheriff Meyer said, “It’s not unusual to see a vehicle parked on the side of the road. We had at least two people tell us they saw the truck at or before 7:30 Monday morning.”
It is not known how long the body had been in the ditch. The official cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner.
Justice of the Peace Troy Bise held the inquest, declaring Roberts deceased.
Members of the family were notified Monday morning and the investigation into the questionable death is pending at this time.
