Lady Eagles Top Rogers

by Mike Organ

In an exciting five-game match, Lexington defeated Rogers three games to two. Lexington won games 1, 3, and 5 by scores of: 25- 21, 25-14, 16-14. Rogers captured games 2 and 4 by scores of: 20-25, 20-25.

Game 1-Johna Alford started her awesome night in this game. Alford had five kills in the game, Meghann Wrinkle had three blocks, and Brittany Nichol had five great sets as Lexington took the lead in the match.

Game 2-Alford continued her power game with five more kills and Madison Bexley had six digs to keep the ball in play so teammates could put the hammer to it. Rogers prevailed in this one even though it was closely contested all the way.

Game 3-Lexington retook the lead in the match with a great team effort. Karley Wren had 10 digs in this game alone. Nichol was able to set the “killers” so they could hammer the ball home. Alford killed six more in this game.

Game 4-Rogers rallied back to take this one despite Alford’s four kills.

Game 5-This game was a nail biter for both teams. The score was close at 8-9, 9-11 until Rogers took the lead 11-14, needing only one point to win the match. Rogers served into the net, giving Alford the ball in hand to serve. She served and Rogers shanked the ball out of play, making it 12- 14. Alford had an ace and then Aleece Moerbe had a kill making it 14-14. Another Alford ace gave Lexington the lead. On the final point, Moerbe blocked a Rogers kill attempt at the net, and it was double hit as Rogers tried to get the ball out of the net on their side.

Coach Kym Aldrich said, “ Karley Wren’s passes were phenomenal the entire match. Johna Alford was exceptional - 21 kills for the match. She also had 11 blocks and Aleece Moerbe had nine as they thwarted the Rogers offense. Johna had 21 kills in 27 attempts, which is fantastic in a volleyball game. Our serving was great also, as we were good on 88 of 100 serves.”

Lexington is now 2-2 for the season.
