From the Superintendent of Schools

Frances M. McArthur, Ph.D. Lexington ISD

It is hard to believe we will be wrapping up the first six weeks of school this Friday. As we move forward to the next five six-week sessions, I want to remind everyone how important student attendance at school is. Research clearly supports how critical student attendance is regarding student achievement. We know that students who come to school every day perform better in school. While we never want students to come to school sick, we do want to encourage parents to make sure students attend school each and every day they are not sick. The state of Texas recognizes the high correlation between student attendance and student success, and therefore distributes the state dollars to school districts based on the number of students present each day. Since 2006 when the legislature compressed the tax rate, Lexington Independent School District has been funded almost exclusively on the number of students in attendance. One way that we can make sure our students are successful is to remind them that attendance and effort is important and being sure they are present every single day they are well. An added bonus will be that we will maximize the state revenue coming to our Lexington schools.
