One Killed and Four Injured

One man was killed and four others injured in a two vehicle accident last Friday morning at 6:09 a.m. Benjamin Franklin Gunter, Jr., 57 years old from Ledbetter, was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m. on September 23 by Dr. Grossatin at Hermann Hospital in Houston after Gunter was taken there for treatment for serious injuries he suffered during the accident.

According to the DPS preliminary report, Alfonso Fernandez from Pasedena, Texas was driving a 2000 Freightliner truck, towing a flatbed trailer. He was parked on the east shoulder of State Highway 90 on top of a hill north of Navasota, facing northbound.

Melvin Iselt, 60 years old from Ledbetter, was driving a 2001 Dodge pickup truck with four passengers, including Gunter, Kelly Iselt, 37 years old from Giddings; Jeremy Haas, 33 of Giddings; and Paul Iselt, 39 from Giddings.

Iselt was traveling northbound on SH 90 approaching the hill where Fernandez was parked. The DPS report said as Iselt approached the hilltop, Fernandez pulled his 18 wheeler out to make a U turn when Iselt’s truck topped the hill, striking the Freightliner, lodging itself under the trailer.

Gunter was Life-Flighted to Hermann Hospital in Houston. Melvin Iselt was taken by ambulance to the Medical Center in College Station. He is listed in fair condition with several broken bones. Kelly Iselt, Jeremy Haas and Paul Iselt were all taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Health Center in Bryan. They are all listed as being in fair condition but suffering from several broken bones and cuts.

Trooper Angela Chambers with the Grimes County DPS Office investigated the accident. Her initial report indicates the weather was dry and clear and that seatbelts were worn by Gunter, Melvin and Kelly. However, it is unknown if the other two passengers wore their seatbelts.
