John H. Reat

May 9, 1918 - August 14, 2011

John H. Reat was born May 9, 1918 in String Prairie near Lexington, Texas to John Arvel and Elvira (Stockton) Reat. He was a 1939 graduate of Texas A&M, served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II as a Captain, and a Major while serving in the Reserves.

On February 11, 1944, he and Dixie Gowan were married in San Antonio, Texas. They have lived in Taylor the past year and were formerly of Lexington from March 1946 to August 2010. He was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Lexington American Legion #6, served as director with Lee County Burleson County Soil Conservation District, served on the Lexington School Board and was past president with Lee County Cattlemen’s Association.

John passed away Sunday, August 14, 2011 in the Lighthouse Altenheim Hospice in Round Rock, reaching the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Clare Edith Ashley.

Surviving are his wife, Dixie Reat of Taylor; son, Richard Arvel Reat and wife Geri of Tanglewood; daughter, Samye Jane Turner and husband Owen of Taylor; sister, Elvira Aminda Hanson of Chattanooga, Tennessee, 2 grandchildren, Dana Barber and John M. “Jody” Reat; 3 great grandchildren, David M. Reat, Richard Corbin Reat, and Logan D. Barber.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 17, 2011 in the Lexington United Methodist Church in Lexington. Rev. Travis Summerlin and Rev. Lee Lamb will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Reat, Kelly Reat, Greg Langhennig, John Ashley, John M. Reat, David M. Reat, and Owen Turner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gale Blackmon, Bruce Reat, Ralph Thompson, Richard Townson, Adolph Herter, Fritz Connally, Corbin Reat, and Legan Barber.
