Elvira “Vera” Edna Groeschel

June 4, 1931 - August 5, 2011

Funeral services for Vera Groeschel, 80 of Serbin, Texas, were held Monday, August 8, 2011 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas with Rev. John Schmidt officiating. A private family burial will be held in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.

Vera passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 5, 2011 at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin.

Elvira “ Vera” Edna Weihe Groeschel was born on June 4, 1931 in New Minden, Illinois to Adolf & Edna (Vogt) Weihe. She was baptized on June 14, 1931 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Minden, IL by Rev. Emmanuel Koestering and confirmed on March 25, 1945 also at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Minden by Rev. P. F. Harre. Her confirmation verse was Psalm 111:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.”

Vera was united in marriage to Norbert “Joe” Groeschel on May 20, 1978 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Paul Hartfield. She had been employed at the Giddings Elementary School and had also worked at Northrup Store, Serbin Store and Warda Store and also helped her son run Stoney’s Barbecue in Giddings.

Vera was a people person who enjoyed visiting and talking with others. She never met a stranger. She loved her grandchildren and was at all of their sporting events. Vera was looking forward to this upcoming Giddings High School Football season and was excited about watching her grandson play his first year of high school football and her granddaughter serve as the school mascot.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister in childhood; brother, Leroy Weihe; two sistersin law, Leona Wolff and Velma Groeschel and three brothers-inlaw, Leonard Groeschel, Ervin Lorenz, Alfred Lorenz.

Vera is survived by her husband, Norbert “Joe” Groeschel of Serbin; three children, Larry Weihe of Beckemeyer, Illinois, Cyndi Watson of Giddings and Wesley Clopton of Serbin; two grandchildren, Jordan Watson of Giddings and Stone Clopton of Serbin; sister, Elaine & Lester Robbins of Pflugerville; four sisters-in-law, Adelia Lorenz of Serbin, Nadine & Bill Christiansen of Kingsville, Gertrude Lorenz of Giddings and Wren Groeschel of Houston and a brother-in-law, Raymond & Bernice Wolff of Houston.

Serving as pallbearers were Troy Hirsch, Miguel Castro, Wesley Burgdorf, Jeff Robertson, Doug Stanley, Monty Tyler and Shane Hoffman.
