Mike Sherman Interview

Tuesday morning I had a chance to sit in on a press interview of Mike Sherman, Texas A& M’s head football coach. Coach Sherman was very informative, personable, and to the point in his answers.

Coach Sherman was asked about high school prospects. He answered that they annually start out with about five to six hundred athletes. They work the list down to the youngsters that would be compatible with their program and school. Sherman stated they would offer a junior a scholarship if he could play for A&M right now. Otherwise they will wait until the athlete completes his senior season. He thinks the early recruiting contributes to problems with a few athletes that may think they are indespensable to their teams and act that way. The character of the athlete can show faults that may lead to the offer being recanted.

When asked about the state 7 on 7 contests held at A& M Sherman responded: “I think that some high school coaches should be involved. They get better coaching and have a school person in charge. There is someone that is involved with the team and the kids are responsible to the school. The responsibility issue is something that is not being taken care of now.”

What is his relationship with high school coaches? Coach Sherman writes a weekly letter to approximately 500 high school coaches. The missives contain motivational tools he is using that particular week, drills to train the players about the upcoming opponent, and various other items. All are designed to make the coaches talk about A&M to their teams.

Coach Sherman talked about recruiting. The recruiters must be honest and transparent with the athletes and prospects. He stated that if the young man thinks he is being lied to, they may lose out on a necessary athlete. If a youngster can’t help or play at A&M they want to lead them in the proper direction for their skills. It may not be what the prospect wants to hear but the truth may reroute the athlete to a more successful career.
