Johanna Louise Bartels
Johanna Louise Werchan Bartels was born on April 17, 1924 in Echo, Coleman County, Texas to Edwin & Lillie (Schultz) Werchan. She was baptized on September 4, 1924 at Waldeck Lutheran Church in Waldeck, Texas by Rev. Carl Bear and confirmed on June 5, 1938 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Manheim, Texas by Rev. A.O. Kaltwasser. Johanna was united in marriage to Eugene Bartels on March 22, 1942 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Manheim with Rev. H. Brunotte officiating. She was employed as a florist for 42 years having worked at Dippel’s Flower Shop and Evelyn’s Flower Shop in Giddings. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was involved in the Ladies Aid. Johanna’s hobbies included sewing and quilting and especially enjoyed making baby blankets for family and friends. She also enjoyed spending time ranching and taking care of her cattle. She was especially proud to have a cow that delivered four calves at one time and all of the calves survived.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin & Lillie Werchan; her husband, Eugene Bartels Sr.; an infant daughter, Patricia Jo Bartels; daughter and son- in- law, Donna & Wayne Jones; sister, Joyce Hall; sister & brother- in- law, Josephine & Clinton Mayer; sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Margie & Milroy Mueller and a brother-in-law, Kermit Lange.
Johanna is survived by her son, Eugene Bartels Jr. & his wife, Kathy of Manheim; four grandchildren, Melissa Goodson & her husband, Walt of Liberty Hill, Blaine Bartels of Austin, Sheryl Wright & her husband, Nathan of Elgin and Patrick Jones & his wife, Brenda of Elgin; four great grandchildren, Erin Goodson & Zane Goodson both of Liberty Hill, Brandon Bowen of Elgin and Lillie Wright of Elgin; brother, James & Sophie Werchan of Austin; brother-inlaw, Jimmy Hall of Austin; sisterin law, Dorothy Lange of Houston, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Johanna Bartels, were held on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Keith Aschenbeck and Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Blaine Bartels, Brandon Bowen, Alan Werchan, Patrick Jones, Monty Mayer and Clayton Mayer. Honorary pallbearer was Walt Goodson.
Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings, Asera Care Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.
