Lee County Seniors Place at National Olympics
Gayle and Peggy Berry of Giddings qualified for the National Senior Games held in Houston, recently. Peggy competed in the shot put, discus and javelin. She placed sixth over all with a throw of 48'. The shot put and discus were a different story with performances that placed her in the middle of the pack out of a group of 22.
Gayle qualified to participate in the high jump, discus, shot put, and javelin in the 70-74 age group. In the high jump he cleared the bar at 4' 1" to finish 6th in that event. “My best effort came in the shot put, with a second place finish” reported Gayle. On his last throw, Gayle managed to better his throw and took second by a foot with a throw of 38' 8".
Some of Gayle and Peggy’s most inspiring moments came from watching 101 year old Trent Lane from Louisiana, participate in several events. He not only received a gold medal for each event, but he also set world records with each throw.
