63rd McDade Watermelon Festival

This year the 63rd McDade Watermelon Festival kicks off July 8, 2011with a Friday night Street Dance with music by Lee County Line, from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m.

Saturday’s activities begin with local melon growers bringing their biggest and best to downtown McDade between 7 and 9 a.m. for the melon weigh in. The top 25 melons are packed on a trailer to be pulled through the grand parade at 10:30, then on to the Festival grounds for the Prize Melon Auction at 5 p.m. It’s great fun to watch our local businesses and individuals compete for the winning bid.

At 8 a.m., car show participants can begin to register and park at the ball field adjacent to the Festival grounds; judging at 11:30, awards at 2pm. This will be the 11th year of a great display of vehicles including motorcycles and tractors. This year a new class was added—“Ugliest Street Legal Truck”. Now’s the time to bring that old farm truck to town and show it off! No registration fee for the car show.

During Saturday, arts and crafts vendors are open, music is playing and food is available at the Festival grounds—by the way, it’s free admission to the grounds on Saturday. Breakfast tacos are available at 9a.m., BBQ sandwiches 11-2:30, as well as other food concessions, even melon slices.

At 2 p.m., sign up to “spit melon seeds as far as you can,” after you’ve tried your pitching arm for horseshoes at 11:30. If you’re still wantin’ to show off your talents, there’s washer pitching at 2:30. Win prizes at bingo and the country walk!

Settle down for a home cooked BBQ dinner with homemade desserts at 4:30 and relax with cold iced tea or cold beer at the melon auction at 5 p.m. Then at 7 p.m join in celebrating the crowning of our newly elected queens and their escorts at the Coronation and finish the evening with a free slice of cold watermelon — and remember to come back next year for our 64th festival.

Proceeds from the Festival go to support a scholarship fund for McDade’s graduates, as well as the McDade Food Pantry, the McDade PTI, Athletic Booster Club, the Historical Museum and the McDade Cemetery. Come to the 63rd McDade Watermelon Festival for great fun for the whole family — and support our community and all the businesses and individuals that will help the 63rd McDade Watermelon Festival be the best ever!
