On Saturday and Sunday, area game wardens, including a game warden dive team from east Texas, conducted a recovery operation on Lake Somerville. A fifteen year old boy drowned off Welch Park after he and another person were thrown from their jet ski. Details about the accident are being investigated, but the young man was recovered on Sunday evening. He was not wearing a life jacket.

Late Sunday night while loading the patrol boat onto the trailer, I issued two citations to a Richmond man for operating a jet ski at night while not wearing a lifejacket. His response was, “I’m just putting it up, it’s not like I’m driving fast or anything”.

Last weekend’s accident should remind everyone water can become dangerous if it’s not respected. With more first time boat/ jet ski operators on the water, safety practices are the most important element to teach all owners, operators and passengers. Take a boating safety course online or in person because one can never know enough about water safety.
