Fire! Fire! And No Fire Works!

Despite the fact that the Leader reported last week that Lexington was still planning to hold their Fireworks in the Park on July 4, there will be no public fireworks display for Lee County this year. Both Lexington and Giddings have cancelled their fireworks displays.

Judge Paul Fischer signed a Declaration of Local Disaster last Monday morning, which bans the sale and discharge of all fireworks in the County. The Declaration has been approved by Governor Rick Perry and has been extended until 7 a.m. July 5, 2011.

Judge Fischer said, “ After reviewing drought indexes and discussions with local VFD’s and people in the community, I feel that the value of life and property outweighs the risks associated with fireworks.”

Travis County and surrounding counties had already banned all public fireworks displays. The fire marshals believe that conditions are just too dry to allow those displays. This will be the first time in 35 years that Austin will not host a fireworks show for the city’s 4th of July celebration.
