George Hughes was born on November 20, 1921 in Sour Lake, Texas to George Sylvester and Laura ( Ayers) Hughes. He enlisted in the Army on October 31, 1942 and was involved in the campaign in the Southern Philippines. On February 6, 1948 in Beaumont, Texas, George was united in holy matrimony to Twyla Eberhard and they had been married 63 wonderful years. He worked as a pipe fitter for Mobil Oil Company for many years. He passed away on the morning of Saturday, April 16, 2011 at his home in Lexington, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.
He is survived by his wife Twyla Hughes of Lexington; children, Georgia Hughes Bond and husband Dan Smith of Austin, Larry Wayne Hughes of Lumberton, Don Bradley Hughes of Huntsville, and Twyla and husband Jim Nicholson of North Carolina; five grandchildren; James C. Bond Jr. and wife Karen of Denton, Theresa Bond Bartlett and husband Chris of Lexington, Cheryl Nicholson Cavanaugh and husband Jacob of North Carolina, Brandi Michelle Bragg of North Carolina, and Charles “Bubba” LaRocca of Beaumont; thirteen great grandchildren; Autumn Bartlett, Katherine Bond, Victoria Bond, Matthew Cavanaugh, Nicholas Cavanaugh, Tristan Bragg, Evan Bragg, Brandon Bragg, Charlie LaRocca, Brendan LaRocca, Danielle LaRocca, Kennedy LaRocca, and Cheyenne Bartlett.
Memorial services for George Hughes, 89 of Lexington, Texas, are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011 at Tanglewood Baptist Church in Tanglewood, Texas with Rev. David Atwood officiating. A reception will follow at the church fellowship hall. On Monday, April 25, 2011 there will be a memorial service held at 10:00 a.m. at the South Park Baptist Church in Beaumont, Texas with Rev. James Blackwell officiating.
