Lexington Log Cabins and Heritage Center Welcomes Visitors and Members

The purpose of the Lexington Log Cabins and Heritage Center, Inc. is to represent the life of the early settlers of northern Lee County, paying particular attention to the rural life. They work to preserve the three circa 1850 log structures on the premises and their furnishings; to catalog and make available documents of historical value or interest; and to promote educational programs that will bring about a better understanding of the history, arts and sciences of the area. This organization owns the furnishings, documents, contents and accoutrements of the cabins and acts as manager and operator of the real property that is owned by the City of Lexington, with whom they have a formal operating agreement.

The Heritage Center, the fourth and final phase of the Cabin Restoration Project began in 2001 and was completed and dedicated in 2005. This 1800-square-foot multiuse center, which resembles the old Buck Quinney service station which once stood on the property, houses an office, workroom, climate controlled storage, research library, meeting room and ADA restrooms. This $100,000 project was necessary for us to function more effectively as an educational museum and tourist attraction for the City of Lexington and northern Lee County. Funding for the Heritage Center has been provided largely through grants from the Lehman Foundation of Giddings, the Lexington Economic Development Corporation, and Alcoa; from individual donors; and from fundraisers.

The Cabins will be open on Saturday, April 30, 2011, during this year’s Homecoming for selfguided tours.

We strive, first, to educate and then to get our neighbors to participate. Involving citizens in the life—both past and present—of this community is our ultimate goal. Please visit the Log Cabins and Heritage Center, join our organization, and get involved in preservi n g our heri- tage.
