Annual Ag Mechanics Project Show Set

Agriculture projects by area high school FFA chapters and county 4-H clubs will be featured at the 10th Annual Blinn College Ag Mechanics Project Show<http://www.blinn.edu/agriculture/> on Wednesday, May 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the new W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex on the Brenham campus<http://www.blinn.edu/ Map%20details/index.htm>. Admission is free and the public is invited to view the entries as the students compete for Blinn scholarships. More than 40 area high schools are expected to participate.

Agriculture Mechanics contests help communities, schools and students develop and design projects that are judged on quality and showmanship. Each student works 300 to 400 hours on their respective project. Projects include agriculture machinery and equipment; livestock equipment; trailers; recreational items including barbecue pits, picnic tables, metal and wood furniture, entrance gates, deer blinds and animal traps, horticulture products and others; along with engines and reconditioned tractors.

The top three entries in each of the divisions will receive Blinn scholarships. Only high school seniors are eligible for the scholarships.

There will also be contests held in the areas of welding, wildlife and horticulture. The welding competition will include a written exam, stick welding, MIG welding and root-bend test. In the horticulture contest, students will have to make 25 multiple choice plant identifications. The wildlife contest will also involve 25-35 multiple choice questions and identification. All winners will be announced at 4 p.m.

Door prizes will also be awarded and demonstrations in welding, cutting, lubrication and power tools will be held throughout the day.

The show, which will be held for the first time at the college’s new Ag Shop building in the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex, is sponsored by the Blinn College Agriculture Mechanics Club in the Division of Agriculture and Applied Technology and is under the direction of Johnnie Schroeder and division chairman Doug Pierce.
