Mary “Sue” Sue Kovar

October 18, 1935 - April 5, 2011

Mrs. Kovar passed away the afternoon of Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin.

Mary Sue Garner Kovar was born on October 18, 1935 in Wortham, Texas to John & Lena Iona ( Mathison) Garner. Following her mother’s death when she was ten, Sue was raised by her grandparents, Willie & Effie Mathison. She was united in marriage to Herman “H.F.” Kovar on May 23, 1953 in Groesbeck, Texas. Sue worked as a Teacher’s Aide at the Giddings Elementary School and retired as a Houseparent Supervisor from the Giddings State School. She was raised in the Baptist church and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Giddings. Sue enjoyed fishing, camping and playing her video poker game.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John & Lena Garner; her grandparents that raised her, Willie & Effie Mathison; brother and sister-in-law, John Vanoy & Monica Garner; sister, Rubylee Garner and a half-sister, Sarah Bowland.

Sue is survived by her husband of 57 years, H.F. “Ham” Kovar of Ledbetter; two sons, Richard & Linda Kovar of Ledbetter and Renee Kovar & his special friend, Cora of Crystal Beach; daughter, Marissa Kovar & her special friend, Donte Willrich of Ledbetter; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mary “Sue” Kovar, 75 of Ledbetter, Texas, were held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Giddings with Pastor Tim Clayton officiating. Burial followed in the Hranice Cemetery in Dime Box, Texas. Visitation was held Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The Kovar family was present for visitation Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers were Rodney Price, William Kovar, Wendell Kovar, Danny Kovar, Shawn Garner, Donald Longoria and Jason Kovar. Honorary pallbearers were Rhonda Roemer, Connie Melaragno, Lynn Garner and Vanessa Garner.
