Lady Eagles Top Dogs 7-4

by Mike Organ

Lexington opened up a 6-0 lead against Thorndale Tuesday night and cruised to a 7-4 victory before the weather got really bad. Madison Bexley and Courtney Robertson had doubles in the important district win.

Lexington’s first two runs came in the bottom of the first inning. Megan Scantlin reached on an error. Mackenzie Brown followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Both runners scored when the second baseman could not handle Meghann Wrinkle’s grounder.

Three more runs came in the second inning. Kristen Boettcher singled with one out. Scantlin singled, Brown singled home Boettcher. Robertson’s double brought home both to give Lexington a 5-0 lead. The Green lead advanced to 6-0 when Hailey Jatzlau singled to lead off the third inning and advanced to second when the centerfielder allowed the ball to get past. A Boettcher single got Jatzlau across home plate.

Thorndale scratched across a run in the fifth but Lexington answered in the sixth. Scantlin singled to lead off. A passed ball on the catcher and a wild pitch moved her to third. A wild pitch to Robertson allowed Scantlin room to score. Thorndale scored three in the top of the seventh, as Lexington allowed themselves to think they had won before the game was over.
