Lorine “Little Granny” Hildegard Domel
Lorine Hildegard Malke Domel was born on August 19, 1921 in the Sand Community near Serbin, Texas to Robert H. & Mary (Biar) Malke. She was baptized on August 28, 1921 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Oswald Lugenheim and confirmed on April 14, 1935 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Herman Schmidt. Her confirmation verse was Matthew 28:20 “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Lorine was united in marriage to Bert Domel on May 12, 1946 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Herman Schmidt. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Janice & Ralph. She began working as a bus driver at Immanuel Lutheran School, and then became a sales clerk at Wolf ’s Grocery in Giddings before working as a restaurant cook. She was employed at the Giddings Sweet Shop and eventually retired from Siegmund’s Restaurant.
Lorine was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ladies Aid and assisted with the church services at the local nursing homes. She volunteered in the church office where she helped in preparing the weekly church bulletins and the monthly newsletters and also distributed the recordings of the weekly church services to the area nursing homes and homebound members. She was a member of the Texas Wendish Heritage Society and served as a docent for the Texas Wendish Heritage Museum in Serbin. A regular at the Giddings Rotary Club’s monthly Country Music Monday program, she also helped distributed the tapes of the performances. Lorine had volunteered with the Lutheran Braille Workers and was a member of the Lee County Seniors In Action. She enjoyed playing dominoes, attending sporting events, taking care of her plants, attending community events and visiting with friends and family.
Lorine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert Domel; her son-in-law, Larry Mitschke; two sisters, Ida Bamsch and Edna Bamsch and two brothers- in- law, Walter Bamsch and Edgar Bamsch.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice Mitschke of Giddings; her son and daughterin law, Ralph & Debbie Domel of Schertz; five grandchildren, Randal Mitschke of Houston, Rachel Korzekwa of Giddings, Rhonda Mitschke of Giddings, Adam Domel of Austin and Jason Domel of Missouri City; two great grandchildren, Summer Korzekwa and Autumn Korzekwa both of Giddings; two sisters-in-law, Leona Hallmark of Beaumont and Elizabeth Marek of Weir as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services for Lorine “Little Granny” Domel, 89 of Giddings, were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Randal Mitschke, Adam Domel, Jason Domel, Wayne Bamsch, Larry Domel and Richard Nemec.
