Convicted Felon Fights Officers in District Court

According to the Lee County Sheriff ’s Department, last Tuesday, March 22, an alarm went off at the district courts office concerning a fight in the courtroom. Montrell Jarrard Washington was being sentenced in Judge Terry Flenniken’s court when he became combative after he heard he was going to jail for eight years. At least three Lee County Deputies and the Bailiff were in the courtroom at the time of the incident. They tried to handcuff him, and a scuffle ensued. They managed to get him out the back door of the courtroom but the scuffle continued as the officers tried to get him into the van to take him back to the Lee County Law Enforcement Center.

Five Giddings Police Officers also responded to assist with subduing Washington.

On February 17, 2011, Washington was convicted of Aggravated Assault causing serious bodily injury to his uncle in an incident that occurred in February 2010 in Doak Springs. Washington was charged with causing severe burns to Donald Washington, who died of complications of the burns on May 9, 2010. Lee County Attorney Martin Placke said that testimony during the trial indicated that the incident resulted from a “prank gone bad.”
