Fire Forces Evacuation of Homes

Bastrop County fought a 36 acre brush fire last Friday that started at around 2 p.m. The fire started in the area of McAllister Rd. and Hwy 71. It continued north over Hwy 71 to the area of Pine Hill Loop. All homes on Pine Hill Loop were evacuated. In total, about 100 homes were being threatened and 35 of those were totally evacuated for about two hours before being allowed to return.

Hwy 71 was shut down in both directions for about two hours. Aerial assistance had to be called in to help fight the blaze. Bulldozers were used to knock down trees and to help clear a path for water trucks.

Sissy Jones, Sheriff’s Assistant at the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office said, “Fire departments and law enforcements worked together to get the fire under control.”

Fire crews in Bastrop County monitored hot spots all night last Friday. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. This was one of 13 fires the Texas Forest Service worked on Friday.
