The Elgin Volunteer Fire Department will hold its 23rd annual Barbecue Cook-off and Softball Tournament on April 8 – 9 at Elgin Memorial Park. Entries in the International Barbecue Cookers Association sanctioned cook off can compete in Brisket, Pork Spare Ribs, Chicken or all three categories. There is an entry fee required. Judges are needed for the event.
Over $2,000 prize money is guaranteed. First place in each category receives a $300 cash prize plus the Gordon Swenson Master Cook Award for $100 and a cutting board. Second place wins $200 cash, third place wins $100, fourth takes $75 and $50 goes to the 5th place winner.
The Buddy Meyer Showmanship Award Trophy will be given to the best barbecue rig.
A Jackpot bean and open meat only competition will also be held.
For the first time ever a softball tournament will be held during the event. Volunteer Randy Reyna, who is organizing the event, recommends creating at least a 12- member softball team for the tourney. The champion team will win cook-off t-shirts.
