Giddings Coach to Pine Tree
Derek Fitzhenry is leaving Giddings ISD and moving to Longview to be athletic director and head football coach at Pine Tree ISD. Fitz has built a powerful program at Giddings. They have progressed into the post season in every girls’ sport so far this season. Football has been his forte’. They have been in the playoffs seven of his eight seasons as the Buffalo mentor.
Fitzhenry moves to Pine Tree ISD. This is an affluent district just outside of Longview, Texas. Fitzhenrry has his work cut out. Pine Tree hasn’t had a winning football season in 10 years and has not won a district football game since 2007. They have been 2-18 the last two seasons. Any improvement will be significant in the eyes of the Pine Tree faithful.
This is a 4A school and they participate in one of the toughest districts in the state. Their opening game is with Henderson, the defending 3A- Division I champion.
Fitzhenry liked Giddings and the students but could not turn down this opportunity to advance in classifications and salary. Rumor has it he will increase his salary about $25,000.
