Weldon Wayne Markert

June 1, 1936 - March 8, 2011

Weldon Wayne Markert passed into the loving arms of his Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. Weldon was 74 years old and died from respiratory and cardiac complications.

Weldon was the second youngest of eight children and grew up in Dime Box, Texas. He was born on June 1, 1936, to Ben and Lena ( Gloyna) Markert. Weldon was baptized on July 5, 1936 and confirmed his Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dime Box on May 27, 1951. On September 22, 1957, Weldon married Della Mae Pietsch at Bethany Lutheran Church in Greens Creek, Texas. This union was blessed with three children, Steve, Lisa and Angie.

Weldon enjoyed his career with the Houston Police Department and served for 34 years. He retired as a sergeant, spending most of his time in the Armed Robbery Division.

Weldon was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He loved the country, especially gardening and fishing. Weldon was known by family and friends for his delicious bar-be-cue. In their retirement years, Weldon and Della enjoyed travelling and took many overseas trips. Weldon held many positions at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Houston. At Immanuel Lutheran in Giddings, Weldon served as Elder. From 2003-2009, he was chairman of the Waldeck Cemetery Association. He was a faithful servant for his Lord.

Weldon is survived by his loving wife, Della, children, Steve Markert, Lisa Gunawan and her husband, Win, and Angie Hasness and her husband, Dave. Grandchildren; Cameron Beitler, Ian and Faith Hasness. He is survived by brothers, Eugene Markert and his wife LaVerne and Bernard Markert, sister-in-laws, Martha Markert, Bernell Markert, and brother- in- law, Andrew Leitko, many nieces, nephews and friends.

Predeceasing Weldon were his parents, brothers, Gilbert and Raymond Markert, sisters Ann Marie Davis, Anita Hutto, Grace Leitko, sister- in- law, Doris Markert, brothers-in-law, Warren Davis and Gairdy Hutto.

Funeral services for Weldon Markert, 74 of Ledbetter, Texas, were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 11, 2011 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Dr. Laurence White and Rev. Keith Aschenbeck officiating. Burial followed in the Waldeck Cemetery in Waldeck, Texas. Visitation was held Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The Markert family was present for visitation Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
