Grace Myrtle Tonn

August 18, 1919 - February 2, 2011

Mrs. Tonn passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at the Medstar Care Center in Giddings.

Grace Myrtle Kasper Tonn was born on August 18, 1919 in Joliet, Illinois to Louis O. & Emma L. ( Borchardt) Kasper. She was baptized at home on August 24, 1919 by Rev. Henry Sanduosa and confirmed on April 9, 1933 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas by Rev. Herman Schmidt. Her confirmation verse was Isaiah 41:10 “Fear thou not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God. I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.” She attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Serbin and graduated from Giddings High School. She enrolled in the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and received her R.N. Certificate on October 14, 1942. Grace faithfully served her country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as an Army Nurse during WWII from May 10, 1943 until receiving her Honorable Discharge on April 16, 1946 having obtained the rank of First Lieutenant. She was part of the 127th Evacuation Army Hospital Unit and served in the United States, France & Germany. Her last assignment was the Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany that was liberated by the “Texas Division” of the American troops. Grace was united in marriage to Clarence G. Tonn on October 19, 1947 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, James & Kenneth. She was employed as a Registered Nurse at Milroy Hospital in Brenham, Texas from 1947 until 1948 and at the Memorial Southeast Hospital in Houston from 1966 until her retirement on July 12, 1982. During her life, Grace served as a Army Nurse, a Red Cross Nurse, a Surgeon Assistant for two years, President of the Ladies Circle at Ascension Lutheran Church in Houston, a member of the Memorial Hospital Alumni, a retired member of the Texas Registered Nurses Association, a member of the Memorial Herman Hospital Retirees Association and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Professor L.O. & Emma Kasper; her son, Rev. James Tonn; her husband of 56 years, Clarence Tonn; her brother, Chaplain Raymond Kasper; her two sisters, Arvilla Weise and Gertrude Knudson; her father-inlaw and mother-in-law, Alvin & Lydia Tonn; her brother-in-law, Victor Tonn & his wife, Naomi and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth & Irene Tonn of Dime Box; her daughter-in-law, Claire Berg of Lapoata, Missouri; six grandchildren, James & Jackie Tonn of St. Joseph, Missouri, Sarah & John Louriero of Lakeworth, Florida, Lydia & Andy Trevizo of Odessa, Grace & Andrew Howald of Boyton, Virginia, Linda McGaffin of Allen and Ray & Debbie Sanders of Giddings; 12 Great grandchildren; 1 great, great grandson and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services for Grace Tonn, 91 of Giddings, Texas, were held at 2: 00 p. m. on Monday, February 7, 2011 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner & Rev. Keith Aschenbeck officiating. Burial with full military honors followed in the Giddings City Cemetery. Visitation was held on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The Tonn family was present for visitation Sunday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers were James Tonn, Ray Sanders, Ray Sanders Jr., Michael Sanders, David McGaffin and Joseph Sanders.

Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Caring Ministry, Immanuel Lutheran School or the charity of one’s choice.
