Lady Buffs 5-0 thru first round of district

The Lady Buffs Varsity basketball team completed the first round of district 5-0 and in sole possession of first place. Smithville is in second at 4-1 with Navasota in third at 3-2.

The Lady Buffs started the week hosting Rockdale coming away with a 65- 28 victory. Giddings jumped out to a 19-5 lead and extended it to a 36-9 halftime advantage.

Leading the Lady Buffs in scoring was Cassidy Melcher, 18. Others who scored were Darrecia Johnson, 12; Kayla Winkfield, 10; Caitie Carney, MaKayla Alva, Allyson Roberts, and Nece Reese, 4; Victoria Schimank 3, and Alex Masek and Kalyn Morgan, 1.

On Friday, January 21, the Lady Buffs traveled to Navasota for a showdown with the 9th ranked Lady Rattlers who were in a tie with Smithville ( who defeated them Tuesday at home) at 3-1 in district. The Lady Buffs came out and after an exchange of a few buckets went on a 19-5 run to take a 23-7 first quarter lead.

The Lady Buffs used their height to its advantage and continually pounded the ball inside to posts Cassidy Melcher and Caitie Carney.

“We felt like we had a definite advantage there and tried to exploit that,” stated Coach Lee Essman. “Our guards did a good job of getting the ball inside and it was there all night.”

The game was even for the rest of the game as the Lady Buffs came out with a 57-47 win.

The Lady Buffs faced a determined Navasota squad and matched their intensity defensively. “Navasota has a reputation defending and playing hard,” said Coach Essman. “I felt that defensively we did a pretty good job against them with a few drives to the basket we need to stop.”

The Lady Buffs will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to La Grange Tuesday night to start the second round of district play.

Scoring for Giddings were Kayla Winkfield, 14; Caitie Carney, 12; Cassidy Melcher, 10; Victoria Schimank, Allyson Roberts, and Darrecia Johnson, 6; and Alex Masek with 3.

The Lady Buffs will host Caldwell on Friday night with two games starting at 5:00 pm, it will also be Parents Night.
