Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest Deadline Looms

Jerry Patterson, Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office, is calling on Texas students to participate in the 15th annual Adopt-A-Beach Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest. The deadline to submit artwork is Tuesday, March 1, 2011.

“Trashing Texas Beaches isn’t cool, but the Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest has the best prize package I’ve ever seen for a kids’ art contest,” Patterson said. “Even the grand prize winner’s teacher gets a Royal Caribbean Cruise and airfare from Continental Airlines.”

The Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Treasures of the Texas Coast Children’s Art Contest began in 1996 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Adopt- ABeach program. The annual competition encourages Texas schoolchildren to learn more about the Texas coast and express what they’ve learned through their art.

Open to students in grades K-6 across Texas, the contest motivates thousands of young artists each year. Brownsville sixthgrader Lilibeth Herrera won the grand prize last year with her crab’s-eye view of trash on a Texas beach. Lilibeth’s artwork now serves as the cover art for the 2011 Treasures of the Texas Coast calendar.

Any medium may be used, but artwork may not be computer-generated. Three-dimensional artwork displaying logos, product brands and/or store names is also ineligible. Artwork should be based on the theme, Treasures of the Texas Coast and show why the Texas coast is special to the student. Artwork also must incorporate the official Adopt-A-Beach slogan, “Trashing Texas Beaches Isn’t Cool.”

Only one entry per student is allowed, and all entries must have a completed parental release form taped to the back. Parental release forms may be printed from the Land Office website located at www.texasadoptabeach.org. Each contest entry must be postmarked by Tuesday, March 1, 2011, and submitted on an 8-inch by 11-inch sheet of white paper.

Students are encouraged to color copy their artwork prior to sending it in because all artwork submitted becomes property of the Texas General Land Office and cannot be returned.

Ten winners will be chosen from the following categories: Grades K, 1 and 2; Grades 3 and 4; Grade 5; and Grade 6. From these 40 winners, one grand prize winner will be selected.

This year’s grand prize winner will receive two round-trip coachclass tickets from Continental Airlines to any Continental destination in the 48 contiguous United States, one seven-night Caribbean cruise from Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines departing out of Galveston, Miami, or Ft. Lauderdale and a class party at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels.

The grand prize winner’s teacher will also receive two round-trip coach-class tickets from Continental Airlines and one seven-night Caribbean cruise courtesy of Royal Caribbean Cruises.
