Children’s Advocacy Center Calls For Volunteers

Are you still trying to kick off the New Year’s resolution that you made just a couple of weeks ago? If you decided to volunteer for a good cause, this one might be for you.

The Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) of Bastrop, Lee and Fayette Counties is looking for people who would like to support them with their talents.

The Children’s Advocacy Center provides intervention and therapeutic services to child abuse victims and non-offending family members. CAC works to restore the dignity, trust and hope to children who have been victimized by sexual and physical abuse.

The Center offers a variety of opportunities to help. Consider serving as a Family Greeter, assisting families who are new to the Center, supporting staff during therapy sessions and forensic interviews, and doing hands-on arts and crafts projects with children.

While you definitely should have a heart for children, working with them and their families is just one of the many options the Advocacy Center has in store. Clerical and office support offers an opportunity to greet and meet CAC visitors and clients, answer the phone, process data, give a hand around the Center or run an errand or two. Scheduled shifts of 3 to 4 hours are most beneficial to the Center.

If entertaining is one of your hidden secrets you could become a volunteer for the Breakfast and Lunch Club. The CAC holds biweekly meetings for the Child Protection Team (breakfast), while the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners meet monthly for lunch. Use your talent of cooking and baking to support the Center and volunteer with the preparation of meals and refreshments.

A helpful hand is always needed for upcoming fundraisers and special events.

Annual fundraisers include the “Cowboys and Caviar” (April) and the “Cook-off on the Colorado” ( October). People are needed for committee work, sponsorships, invitations and set-up. Of course new ideas for fundraising opportunities are always welcome.

CAC would like to bring special attention to April, Child Abuse Prevention month. During the month, awareness campaigns and projects will be carried out all over Bastrop, Fayette and Lee Counties with special events for children and the community. Volunteer to “Take A Stand Against Abuse” this April.

If your time doesn’t allow you to commit regularly, you can still help by maintaining the inside and outside of the Center. Possibilities range from minor to major repairs as well as taking care of the grounds and flowerbeds. These activities would also be a great opportunity for group volunteer work.

A big topic on the Center’s wish list for 2011 is to expand their outreach and prevention activities, especially in Lee and Fayette Counties. CAC would like to be represented at local community events to promote awareness about child abuse, which is the ultimate goal for prevention. Consider helping CAC reach out.

Most of the volunteer positions require a minimum age of 18 years; some, however, require you to be at least 21 years of age. Interested?
