Lady Buffs win two

Undefeated in district
by Coach Lee Essman

The Lady Buffs won two district 23-3A games last week to improve to 3- 0 in district. Giddings traveled to Caldwell on Tuesday and came away with a 39-20 win. It was a low scoring affair as the Lady Buffs shot poorly from the field. Giddings started out slow led 11-7 after one quarter and then held the Lady Hornets scoreless in the second for a 22-7 lead at the half.

On the positive side, defensively the Lady Buffs held the Lady Hornets to 20 points. “We have to have effort every night on defense, especially on nights like we had scoring or lack of scoring versus Caldwell,’ stated Coach, ‘that is one thing that we can control night in and night out, and the kids seem to be buying into that.” The Lady Buffs were lead in scoring by Kayla Winkfield with 15; Cassidy Melcher, 6; Caitie Carney, 5; Allyson Roberts, 5; Darrecia Johnson, 4; Kalyn Morgan, 3, and Alex Masek with one.

On Friday, January 14, the Lady Buffs hosted rival Smithville which was a game of district leaders. The Lady Tigers came out and played determined basketball and the game was back and forth with a lot of action with the Lady Buffs holding a 20-17 lead after one and a 36-32 margin at the half.

“We scored 2 points less in one quarter than we did in a half against Caldwell,” stated Coach. Once the Lady Buffs got the lead in the first, they lead throughout the whole game. After intermission the Lady Buffs came out and outscored Smithville 21- 13 to take a 57-45 lead and then 18-11 in the fourth for a 75-56 victory. “ We turned up the pressure defensively in the second half and that allowed us to get some easier buckets,’ stated Coach, ‘we took it to them in the second half, instead of them bringing it to us”. Leading in scoring for the Lady Buffs were Kayla Winkfield, 20; Caitie Carney, 15; Darrecia Johnson, 15; Cassidy Melcher, 10; Alex Masek, 5; Allyson Roberts, 3; Nece Reese, Tavia Richard, and Victoria Schimank, 2; and Kalyn Morgan, 1.
