Heather Exner has let her writing skills “pay off” for her school, Lexington Elementary. She was named the 2010 Luminant Scholar winner last Friday morning after competing against students across the state to earn the $5,000 grand prize for her school. Her essay, which answered the question “How can I help protect the environment?” was selected as the best one submitted from thousands of entries. Her classmates were as excited as her school because Heather’s efforts also earned every 5th Grader at LES an ice cream!

The Luminant Scholar Program is designed to increase awareness of environmental protection among fifth-grade elementary students across Texas. As part of this program, Luminant awarded $50,000 in scholarships and grants in the fall of 2010.
