Fatality at Edge of Town
A fatal accident that occurred Monday afternoon took the life of 49-year-old Stanley Carl Burks of Gilmer, Texas. The accident occurred at 3:10 p.m. on Hwy. 77 about 50 feet north of the intersection of Loop 123, in front of the St. Joseph Family Medical Clinic at the edge of town.
According to the Department of Public Safety report, Burks was traveling eastbound on Loop 123 in his 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck when he failed to yield the right-of-way and attempted to turn left onto Hwy. 77. He was struck by a 1998 18- wheeler traveling southbound on Hwy. 77. The freight truck was driven by Luis Alberto Ardila of Houston.
Ardila suffered a small laceration to his right cheek. Burks was declared dead at the scene at 4:22 by Lee County Justice of the Peace Danita Smith. The report indicates that both men were wearing their seat belts.
Trooper Ordie Manner headed up the investigation, assisted by DPS Troopers Bob Thorp, Richard Krenek and Jerald Sams. Also helping at the scene were members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, Lexington Police Department, Lexington Volunteer Fire Department and Lexington EMS.
