Young Eagles Fall to Vikings

by Mark Strain

Corey Strain on the go. Corey Strain on the go. The Lexington JV Eagle BB team played host to the Lago Vista Vikings in the “Old” gym Tuesday night, January 4th. The focus of the second game of the season was a little strategy and conditioning. The JV “Seven” were pitted against ten Vikings that were run in and out of the game allowing Lago to use fresh athletes which played to their strength of full court press and fast breaks. Lago got the scoring going with a couple of buckets before Lexington’s #12 Corey Strain was fouled and sent to shoot two free throws, making both. Lago answered with 2 more buckets before # 24 Cameron Janda hit a back handed bucket under the basket with 3 seconds left ending the first period 8-4 Vikings.

The second period was more of the same. Speed and Press by Lago leading to their scoring 9 more. Lexington had #30 Marcus Cassassa add 2, # 11 Chris Johnson with 1, # 32 Nate Holcomb got 2, #24 Derek Dane 2 and finally #34 London Jacob added one to end the second period 17-12 Lago, still within Lexington’s reach. As a statistical side note and coaching philosophy to use all the players, each Lexington JV member scored in the first half and only once by each player.

The third Period is when only having seven players and it being early in the season for Lexington cost us the game. Jacob was able to add a single bucket for the team, while Lago piled on 15 points making the score 32-14. The third period was delayed for 10 minutes as one of the young Eagles’ body rebelled against all the running causing coach Rogers and Assistant Principal Wahrmund to switch into janitorial duties and mop the gym floor. After the ten minute delay Strain and Dane took the ball and were streaking down the court at full speed when they hit a wet spot on the floor and both boys were simultaneously and unceremonially dumped on the ground causing another five minute delay and more janitorial services.

The fourth period showed Lago pull back on their press and fast breaks and go defensive. The Eagles scored 9 to the Vikings 6 to end the game 38- 23 Lago Vista. In the fourth Jacob added 3, Holcomb 4, and Cassassa 2.

The JV Eagles gave it all and represented the Eagle Nation well.
