Eagles to Face Idalou in State Title Game

by Mike Organ

It will be a green and gold afternoon Saturday as the Lexington Eagles face the Idalou Wildcats in the Class 2A Division II championship game. The UIL has scheduled the game at 4:00 pm in Vernon Newsom Stadium in Mansfield.

Idalou started the season slowly. They lost three of their first four games. Lubbock Cooper a 3A team defeated the Wildcats 29-23 in the first game of the season. Littlefield, a Class 2A-DI semifinalist beat the Wildcats 28-21 in game two. Friona provided Idalou with their first win of the season by a score of 28-14. One more loss to Lubbock Roosevelt 21-17 ended their non-district schedule. The Wildcats went on a ninegame win streak. They defeated Stanton 23-0, Hawley 54-0, Post 48-6, Forsan 61- 0, Anson 62-0, and Coahoma 14-6 in district. In the playoffs they have beaten Alvord 33-3, Crawford 42-6, Holliday 20- 3, and Paul Pewitt 17-0. During the ninegame streak, Idalou has given up a total of 24-points.

The two teams look to be mirror images, both having strong defenses and diversified offenses. Both teams can run the ball and pass the ball. Lexington seems to have a speed advantage over the Wildcats but so did Paul Pewitt.

In Idalou’s semifinal win over Paul Pewitt, the Wildcats’ two touchdowns came on passes from Eric Estes to Tyler Dowdy. Top running back Nick Gary was out of the Pewitt game with a shoulder injury although he did kick the field goal and PATs.
