Lady Eagles Top Franklin

by Mike Organ

Lexington’s Lady Eagles opened the 2010-2011 basketball season with a 56-49 win over Franklin. Four Lady Eagles scored in double figures as Lexington offered a balanced attack. Lexington won the first and fourth quarters by large margins to earn the victory.

Emily Bell scored 16 points, Angel Parks 14, Rachel Clark 11, and Mackenzie Brown 10 in the win. Clark fired up three threepoint shots, Brown two, and Deja Griffin bagged one.

Defensively Parks pulled down 11 rebounds and the diminutive Brown snagged 9 caroms on the backside by blocking out properly. Bell and Griffin pulled down seven and six missed shots respectively.

Coach Ryan Starnes said, “The girls played hard, ran the floor well, and blocked out well on the defensive boards. We scored 56 points against a 2-3 zone in the first game. We will take that in the middle of the season. We had too many turnovers, but that is to be expected early in the season. We will eliminate a lot of those as the season progresses. Miranda Jones had limited playing time due to a badly sprained ankle. She and Christen Schneider will be in the game rotation to keep the players fresh.”
