Leroy Gilbert Schulz

July14,1924- November10,2010

Leroy went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple, Texas.

Leroy was born on July 14, 1924 in Vernon, Texas to Carl and Selma (nee Shoppa) Schulz. He was baptized on July 27, 1924 at Zion Lutheran Church in Vernon, Texas by Rev. L. Heinemeir and was confirmed at Zion on May 15, 1938 by Rev. H.F. Pieman.

Leroy was raised, educated and lived in the Lockett community in the Vernon, Texas area where he attended the parochial school and graduated from Lockett High School. In 1942, he went to San Diego, California to work in a defense factory and returned to Vernon in 1943 to enter the Army in May of that same year. He served a year and a half in the States and a year and a half in Europe with the 102nd Artillery, returning home in March of 1946.

On January 19, 1947 he married Violet Wolf at Bethany Lutheran Church in the Greens Creek community near Giddings, Texas by Rev. Paul Eifert. After their marriage, they made their home in Vernon, Texas. On January 8, 1948, their son Danny was born.

While living in Vernon, Leroy worked at the First State Bank and later at an implement dealership as their bookkeeper. In 1952, they moved to Giddings for a short while and then to Rockdale, Texas with their son who was then four years old. They made their home in Rockdale and Leroy went to work for Alcoa in accounting. They lived in Rockdale until 1976 when they moved back to Giddings. After 30 plus years with Alcoa, Leroy retired in January of 1983 and continued living in Giddings enjoying small-time ranching until his health problems caused them to move to Temple, Texas in June of 1999.

Leroy, Violet and Danny were always active and faithful members in the Lutheran church wherever they have lived.

Those preceding him in death were his parents; his two brothers, Arthur and Monroe; his niece, Barbara King; his nephew, Gary Don Schulz; his great granddaughter, Emma Kate Kesner and his sister-in-law, Hedy Schulz.

He is survived by his wife, Violet Schulz of Temple; his son, Danny Schulz and his wife, Sharon of Granbury, Texas; his granddaughter, April and her husband, Steve Kesner and their children Tanner & Mackenzie of Pflugerville, Texas; his grandson, Justin Schulz and his wife, Misty and their children, Russell, Jeremy & Jordyn of Granbury, Texas; his nephew, Monroe Schulz Jr. and his wife Sharon and their children; his nieces, Donna Rogers, Patsy Tomison and Janet Beard and their spouses and families and a sisterin law, Arvie Schulz.

Funeral services for Leroy Schulz, 86 of Temple, Texas and formerly of Giddings, Texas were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Wilbern Michalk and Rev. Herbert Graf officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery. Visitation was held on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The Schulz family was present for visitation Saturday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers were Willie Patridge, Heinz Tannreuther, Robert Timmerman, Jimmy Throckmorton, Billy Gest and Rodney Meyer. Honorary pallbearers were Monroe Schulz Jr., Donna Rogers, Patsy Tomison, Janet Beard and Glen King.

Memorials may be given to The Lutheran Hour, Lutheran World Relief or a charity of your choice.
