Like Peas In A Pod

Family farm moving forward

Virginia Sides and friends in her store. Virginia Sides and friends in her store. The following is a story brought to The Leader by Jessie Opal Beard about her friends Winferd and Virginia Sides and their farm. He was raised in the Lexington area. This is from an article printed in the Country World newspaper.

The Sides purchased their pea farm in 1957 in Canton, Texas. They started very small since they were the only two pickers and they delivered their unshelled peas to the Dallas Market. The Sides no longer sell at this market; however, most of their Dallas customers come visit them at their local market.

Several years ago their building in Canton, burned and they had to buy all new equipment, also about that time Winferd who was born with cerebral palsy, had to be put in a nursing home. Mrs. Sides’ son-in-law came to help with the business and her grandson also helps with the business.

Aside from their own store in Canton, the Sides have a high demand from other sellers as well, such as HEB, Central Market, and Whole Foods. They have about 400 to 500 acres in Canton area and about 400 acres in the Rio Grande Valley.
