Carl Herbert Mertink Sr.

Mr. Mertink passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at his home in Northrup.

Carl Herbert Mertink was born on November 12, 1918 in Warda, Texas to Ben A. & Alma A. (Schneider) Mertink. He was baptized on November 13, 1918 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda, Texas by Rev. Gottfried Buchschacher and confirmed on April 9, 1933 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas by Rev. Herman Schmidt. Carl was united in marriage to Bernell Urban on January 6, 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fedor, Texas by Rev. A.F. Michalk. He was a farmer and rancher and had been employed by the Withers Ranch. He was also a butcher and had worked at the H.W. Doyle Processing Plant in Giddings. Carl was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin where he had served as an Elder and Head Usher. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking care of his cattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Allan Lehmann; sister and brother-inlaw, Marie & Herbert Jenke; brother-in-law, Marvin Urban and sister-in-law, Jeanette Reeh.

Carl is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bernell Mertink of Northrup; son, Carl Mertink Jr. of Northrup; two daughters, Sandra Lehmann of Warda and Patricia & Harry Lehmann of Warda; six grandchildren, Terry Lehmann of Warda, Steven & Brandy Lehmann of Warda, Lisa & Matt Cummings of Elgin, Leann Brade of Warda, Lori & Nik Droemer of Victoria and Lacey & Jordan Kalbas of Elgin; seven great grandchildren, Kaitlynn Lehmann of Warda, Alyssa Brade of Warda, Jaxyn Droemer of Victoria, Charley Droemer of Victoria, Henry Kalbas of Elgin, Ruby Kalbas of Elgin and Gwynevere Kalbas of Elgin; sister in-law, Doris Urban of Grand Prairie as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Carl H. Mertink Sr., 91 of Northrup, Texas were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 5, 2010 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas with Rev. John Schmidt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was held Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The Mertink family was present for visitation Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Pallbearers were Terry Lehmann, Steven Lehmann, Matt Cummings, Nik Droemer, Jordan Kalbas and Gary Jenke.
