Giddings Rocks Rockdale 50-13

by Mike Organ

Giddings put a dent into Rockdale’s playoff hopes with a 50-13 shellacking. With the victory, Giddings neared a spot in the playoffs for the sixth consecutive year, and the seventh time in Coach Derek Fitzhenry’s eight years at the helm. A Giddings loss to Navasota and a Caldwell loss to Rockdale could put the Buffs into a serious tiebreaker where they could be eliminated on a point system that was set up before the season started.

The game was close for a quarter and a little bit of the second. Giddings exploded in later in the second period to zoom out to a 27-6 halftime lead. Giddings had 47 points on the scoreboard before Rockdale would score again.

Joseph Glenn had his second consecutive 200-yard game with 15 carries for 239 yards and three touchdowns. Glenn ripped off a 53-yard run for the first score. Michael Rangel added the PAT for a 7-0 Giddings lead. Rockdale answered early in the second period on a Daniel Brooks run.

Then the Giddings onslaught began. Spencer Fitzhenry scored on a nine-yard run. Glenn anted up a 40-yard scoring trip and Fitzhenry scored again to put the Buffs up 27-6. Three more scores in the third quarter boosted the score to 47-6. Deon Hickey went 12-yards, Glenn went two, and Hickey added the third on a 23- yard trip.

Rockdale was able to score in the fourth to close to 47-13. Rangel added a 37-yard field goal to cap the scoring for the night.
