LHS Theater Department’s Fall Production
From the moment father Bud Turpin (played by Xavier Ward ) falls over dead at the breakfast table, right through his funeral in the “Gentleman Farmer” coffin,
Dearly Departed makes it clear that there’s more to livin’ and dyin’ in the south than you can shake a bushy tailed pole cat at.
Don’t miss Lexington High School Theater Department’s fall production of Dearly Departed a Southern comedy by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 23rd and Monday, October 25th at the First Baptist Church Youth Activity Center. Ticket prices are $3 for adults and $2 for students.
Set somewhere south of the Mason Dixon line, in the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt,
Dearly Departed tells the story of the beleaguered Turpin family and proves that living and dying in the South is seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpins’ other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion: Firstborn Ray-Bud (Kyler Beisert) goes crazy as the funeral bills mount; Junior, the younger son (Jason Washington), is juggling financial ruin, a pack of monster kids, and a wife who suspects him of infidelity; both Ray-Bud and Junior are joined by their desperate but optimistic wives Lucille and Suzanne (Brianna Brooks & Malissa Sanders ); the spinster sister, Delightful (Will Holcomb), copes with death as she does life, by devouring junk food; and all the neighbors add more than their two cents. Amidst the chaos, the Turpins turn for comfort to their friends and neighbors, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, the funeral. (Xzandra Chrisner) heads the cast of dysfunctional characters playing the mother, Raynelle. Marguerite, the scripture quoting, self-righteous sister of the deceased is played by (Chelsey Iselt) who is partnered with her worthless, jobless son, Royce, portrayed by (Vaughn Kassner). There cast is rounded out with: well wishin’ funeral attendees Juanita & Veda (Karley Wren & Shayna Jacobs), Reverend Hooker (Cody Church), Clyde the car garage repairman (Avahn Crumb), Norville (Xavier Ward) and Nadine (Regan Johnston).
The humor of Dearly Departed lies in the bold southern charmers and their ridiculous responses to a grave matter. Come support the Lexington Eagles in a farcical, funfilled evening of theater.
