Going green is paying off for Lexington Elementary School fifth-grader Heather Exner who was awarded a $1,000 United States Savings Bond last Thursday, October 7, as part of the 2010 Luminant Scholar Program. Local Elementary School teacher Tina Woodward is the 5th Grade Writing teacher who facilitated getting the essays written and submitted to Luminant for review.

Luminant officials, along with selected guests, were in Lexington to honor Heather for writing the essay that best answered the question “How can I help protect the environment?”

The Luminant Scholar Program is designed to increase awareness of environmental protection among elementary students across Texas. As part of this program, Luminant is expected to award nearly $50,000 in scholarships and grants this fall.

Heather’s homeroom class received T-shirts from Luminant. Cindy Spencer is her homeroom teacher.
