Giddings Opens District Play

by Mike Organ

After an unexpected three weeks without a football game, the Giddings Buffaloes start District 23-AAA play against longtime rival LaGrange. Giddings enters the game with a 2-2 record and LaGrange is 3-2. LaGrange enters the contest coming off a 30-15 win over Bellville.

Gone from the Leopard arsenal is passer Josh Schneider, but returning is the top receiver from last season, Brandon Wilkerson. According to some coaches Wilkerson may be the best 3A wide receiver in the state. Six other starters return. The coach, Wayne Walker, left for a new position and Matt Kates was hired. The returnees have been learning a new system. The Leps seem to be getting better each week.

The two schools have played some strongly contested games over the years, despite their records. This game should be no different. Giddings will have a lot of rust to get rid of after the lay off and LaGrange should be in mid season form. Expect a spirited, hotly contested game Friday night.
