William J. McClain
William J. McClain, 88 of La Grange and the son of Georgie and Roda (Jacobus) McClain, was born on October 12, 1921 in Davis County, Missouri. He was received into God’s kingdom of grace through the washing of Holy Baptism and Confirmation in 1946 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Missouri. On December 30, 1939, he was united in marriage with Betty Jean Pendery at the Methodist Parsonage in Cameron, Missouri. This union was blessed with five children. As a young man, he worked on the family farm and the broom factory in the Cameron area. Later, he became a streetcar driver for the city of Kansas City. After moving to Florida in the fall of 1946, he began working as a carpenter, a position which later developed into that of a licensed building contractor for the state of Florida. He served in many positions including chairman, vice chairman, trustee, and various boards at Lakeside Lutheran in Venice, FL and Trinity Lutheran in Englewood, FL. He was chairman of the Board of Education at Trinity Lutheran in Orlando, FL when Trinity’s Christian Day School opened in 1953. He was an ardent supporter of Lutheran Education. In the late 1950’s, the family moved to the Venice, FL area, where Bill built many homes and remodeled countless others. He, Betty, and Richard moved to Texas in 2003 to live with Mark, the youngest son. He entered Med Star Healthcare Center in Giddings, TX at the end of 2008. Our Lord Jesus called Bill home on September 23, 2010 at the age of 88 years, 11 months, and 11 days.
Funeral services for William were held on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Winchester, Texas with Rev. James Herzog officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his four children - Francis (and wife Evelyn) of Venice, FL, daughter, Karen McDougall, of Venice, FL, son, Mark (and wife Leann) of La Grange, and daughter, Mary Castle (and husband Bill) of Sarasota, FL. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Kenneth McDougall, Kandi Ross, and Kelli Peyton (and husband, Ron), all of Venice, FL; Christina Reitz (and husband Steve) of Fort Meade, MD and Rebecca McClain of Grapevine, TX; one sister, Beverly (and husband Greg) of Quincy, MA.; 9 great-children – Austin and Abbigail Ross, and Kurtis, Anna Mae, Madison, Timothy and Alexia Peyton of Venice, FL and Stephanie and Mark Reitz of Fort Meade, MD. He is also survived by several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty on December 5, 2009; his parents; his son, Richard; his brother, Marvin; a sister, Jeanie Barnes; a son-in-law, Ken McDougall and an infant grandson.
Memorials may be made to the St. Michael’s Lutheran Church Restoration Fund in Winchester, Texas.
