International Quilt Festival in Houston

The 2010 edition of International Quilt Festival will take place November 4-7 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston, Texas. Classes and events will begin November 1, and Preview Night will be held November 3 from 7-10 p.m.

At this year’s show, there will be close to 1,100 merchant booths offering antique and contemporary quilts and fabrics, patterns, notions, and books for the quilting and sewing enthusiast. Festival visitors will also find everything from antiques, crafts, and home décor items to clothing, jewelry, bags, and other accessories.

On display at this year’s show will be over 1,400 incredible quilts, dolls, wearable art garments, and other works of fabric art in more than 40 different special exhibits. These textile artworks run the gamut from antique time-honored patterns to cutting-edge contemporary fabric artistry.

Among this year’s highlights are traditional quilt exhibits such as “America Collects Quilts®: Patriotic Quilts,” which features antique patriotic-themed works; “Baltimore Album Review II: Baltimore’s Daughters-Friends Stitch Past to Future,” an inspiring exhibit of quilts created in the Baltimore Album Style; and “Texas Guilds Award-winning Traditional Quilts.”

Other exciting exhibits making their debut this year include “Text on Textiles: Words as Design in Quilts,” “Art Quilts from the Book 500 Art Quilts,” and two exhibits from the Studio Art Quilt Associates. Visitors to Festival will also get the first look at the finalist and winning quilts from the 2010 edition of “Quilts: A World of Beauty,” the prestigious fall Judged Show of the International Quilt Association.

“Many people come to Festival for the shopping and to look at the amazing works of art, but what they may not realize is that there is another equally important element of the show experience, and that is education,” Bresenhan says. “There are virtually endless possibilities to learn while at Festival, including many free opportunities.”
