Buffs Lose a Thriller 21-20

by Mike Organ

After spotting LaVernia 14 points, the Giddings Buffaloes roared back to tie the game at halftime. LaVernia took another seven-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Buffs answered back with a score to get within onepoint. Coach Derek Fitzhenry opted to go for two on the PAT to get the win. When the play failed, the Buffs followed with an onside kick. A Giddings recovery on the kick gave them one more shot at scoring. The Buffs moved down to the 10-yard line without a time out. On the spike of the ball, a five-yard penalty was incurred by Giddings. The resulting field goal was wide of the uprights, giving LaVernia a thrilling 21-20 win.

This was a game Giddings should have won, according to the statistics. Giddings rushed for 319 yards; Lavernia 97. LaVernia passed for 19 yards for total offense of 116 yards. Giddings ran 60 offensive plays compared to 36 plays for LaVernia. Giddings had 19 first downs compared to 9 for the Bears. The opportunistic Bears picked up a Buff fumble and returned it 80-yards for a score that probably decided the game.

Quarterback Spencer Fitzhenry rushed for 110 yards and Joseph Glenn tallied 94 yards on 17 carries. Fitzhenry scored two times for Giddings and Deon Hickey got the third on a 43-yard run.

The Giddings defense was very effective against the LaVernia offense. The offense kept the LaVernia defense on the field for a large portion of the game.

Giddings is now 1-2 for the season and travel to 2-1 Elgin this week.
