Buffs Test Burnet on Rug
Giddings is set to open the 2010 on their new artificial surface against the Burnet Bulldogs. The two teams have scrimmaged the last two years so the teams are familiar with each other. Burnet brings to Lee County a storied football tradition. Two Bulldog alumni are now gracing NFL rosters. Quarterback Stephen McGee (Dallas) and receiver Jordan Shipley (Cincinnatti) are suiting up on Sunday.
Once again Burnet has a receiver that is picked to be the district MVP in Josh Barrera. The missing ingredient is an outstanding quarterback. The Bulldog prospectus does not even list a quarterback to get the ball to the outstanding receiver. A running back in Zach Maldanado will take some of the focus off Barrera.
Defensively the Bulldogs return seven starters from an 8-3 team of 2009. The defense is of medium size. The Dog’s hustle to the ball and make plays as a team.
This should be a win for Giddings on their new carpet. If the temperatures continue to hover near 100, fans should bring sunglasses for the start of the game and plan on hydrating themselves during the first half. The surface is beautiful and will stay that way for many years to come with minimal upkeep.
