Brown Wins MVP at Rockdale Tennis

16 Local Tennis Players Compete at the Rockdale Open in the Junior and Adult Divisions

Sophomore Mackenzie Brown won the Most Valuable Player trophy at the Rockdale Tennis Tournament last week. She was the only double winner in the tourney that was competing in the open events. Brown teamed with David Cuebas of Taylor to win the Mixed Doubles Open. The duo beat a Thorndale team 6-1, 6-2 and defeated a Taylor team in the finals 6-1, 6-2. The big win was upsetting the defending champions Tom and Anna Maldonado of Rockdale 6-3, 2-6 (10-4) in the semifinals. Earlier in the week, Brown won the 18 Girls Doubles event defeating a Rockdale team 6-0, 6-1 and then ousted Lexington’s Jessica Parrish and Megan Scantlin 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. Parrish and Scantlin won 2nd after defeating a Rockdale team 6-0, 6-0 in the round robin event.

Colby Bexley had an excellent tourney placing 2nd in Boys 12 singles. He defeated a Rockdale player 8-3 and a Taylor netter 11-9 before losing to Blake King of Rockdale in the finals 6-4, 6-4. Bexley teamed with Coby Robertson in Boys 12 Doubles with two very close losses. They lost to a Woodlands team 4-6, 6-3 (10-3) and a Rockdale team 7-5, 5-7 (10-4) Also Robertson, only a 3rd grader. lost to the eventual champion 8-3 and also to a Lexington netter Jacob Townsend 6-1, 6-3. Townsend won consolation defeating a Rockdale player 6- 1, 6-0. Townsend also placed 2nd in Boys 12 Doubles with Vance Kasner defeating a Rockdale team 6-2, 3-6 (11-9) and losing in the finals to a Woodlands team 3-6, 3-6. Kasner won consolation in singles with a 6-2, 2-6 (10-8) with over a Woodlands player

In the high school division Brown teamed with London Jacobs in 18 Mixed Doubles defeating a Taylor team 7-5, 6-3 and losing to a Franklin team 6-3, 6-1. Jacob won 2nd with Vaughn Kasner in Boys 16 Doubles defeating one Rockdale team 6-1, 6-1 and losing in the finals to another Rockdale team 3-6, 7-5 (10-5). Ashley Retzloff had a good tournament losing to a Taylor player and also to a Rockdale player 7-5, 6-3 in a very close match.

Father/Son combo Larry and L.J. Maxwell represented Lexington well in the strong Open Men’s Doubles division where 16 teams entered. The Maxwell’s advanced to the semifinals with wins over a Thorndale team 6-3, 6-2 and a Taylor team 6-3, 7-6. They lost to a Rockdale team in the semis 2-6, 2-6. L. J. was clearly the 3rd best player in the Open Singles draw that had 18 players entered. The Lexington netter drew the champion in the very 1st round losing to Teaghan Averitt of Willis 5-7, 4-6 in one of the best matches of the tournament. Rick Spencer played Men’s Tournament singles winning his 1st match over a Smithville netter 6- 1, 7-5 and his next match over a Rockdale player 6-1, 6-1. The tennis season will conclude with the Lexington Back to School Tournament on August 20-21.
