Sports Thoughts

by Mike Organ

Coach Jason Holcomb has just about filled out his coaching staff. He still needs help with one girls’ position. There will be some movement within the staff with Marla Mitchell moving up to help with Junior High sports. There are a couple of new names which we will introduce to you in the near future.

Coach Fitzhenry at Giddings, with more coaches, has several positions to fill. The most notable is the late resignation of softball coach Kristy Bradford. Bradford will return to Hitchcock, where she previously coached. The position is one that presents the opportunity to build a successful program. With the cash settlement with Kevin Hall and a good recommendation from the school, the Buffs staff will get a large turnover. The top positions remain in place with Coach Fitz and defensive coordinator Rick Zamora.

Coaching school will start Sunday in San Antonio. The convention will last until the all-star football game on Tuesday night. Coaches will disperse from SA to their schools and start to work. The first football and volleyball workouts will be August 2nd.

The Rangers and Astros are going in opposite directions. The Rangers just acquired a Cy Young Award winner in Cliff Lee to help their pitching staff. The Astros have hired Jeff Bagwell to coach hitting. What about pitching and fielding? They have needs in all areas.
