Texas Tornadoes at National Competition
The Lee County Texas Tornadoes left Lexington on June 22 at 6:30 in the morning and returned from their National Competition at 2:30 a.m. on June 27. The group won several awards during the competition. They brought home a First Place ribbon in the Senior Quad competition; a First Place ribbon in the Challenged Ride division; a Second Place award Reserve Championship in the Adult/ Youth Mix competition; 3rd and 4th Place ribbons for Color Guard; 3rd Place in the 4H Division; 4th and 5th Place ribbons in the Youth Quad competition and a 5th Place award, out of 18 teams, in the Theme competition.
There were 61 teams from seven different states competing at the event. One of the organizers of the Lee County Texas Tornadoes, Garry Turner, said, “It is so nice to see the people I started riding with 34 years ago bring their family back to the Drill Team to continue this family tradition.”
Earl Shultz was Garry’s adult leader when he was in 4H the first year Lee County went to the State Competition that was held at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Ft. Worth. Now Earl rides with his son, Randy Schultz, daughter Brenda Pillack and granddaughter Whitney Pillack.
Other members of the Lee County Texas Tornadoes who traveled to Nationals last month were Garry Turner, Angela Turner, Katie Turner, Kayla Turner, Cheryl Medders, Darrell Griffith, Savannah Griffith, Brian Griffith, Timmy Griffith, Ashley Horack, Autumn Hall, Brooke Teal, Mandy Berger, Amber Turnipseed, Jordan Wilhite, Gary Torn, Jana Torn, Garyln Radford, Keri Green, Kathy Smith and John O’Bier.
