McDade Watermelon Festival this Saturday

The McDade community will host its 62nd Annual Watermelon Festival Saturday, July 10 in historic downtown McDade. People come from all over Central Texas to celebrate the season of the delicious fruit and the McDade area’s ability to grow some of the largest and best watermelons around. The free event will begin at 7 a.m. with the watermelon weigh-in running until 9 a.m. and activities continuing throughout the day, ending after the 2010 Queen’s Coronation, at 7:30 p.m. that evening.

One of the best antique/classic car shows in the area will start at 8 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. At 9 a.m. concessions will open, including T-shirt sales and arts and crafts. Live music will be heard throughout the day and McDade’s Historic Museum will be open from 10 until 2.

The Grand Parade attracts many out-of-town entrants. It starts at 10:30 a.m. downtown and is always one of the largest parades around, sometimes featuring 100 or more entries.

A horseshoe pitching contest will start in earnest at 11:30 a.m. Bingo competition will open at noon, as well as the Country Walk. BBQ sandwiches will be available for consumption beginning at 11 a.m. Then, for those who are adept at spitting watermelon seeds, a contest will be held at 2 p.m. and a washer pitching contest follows at 2:30 p.m.

Then, the hungry folks will sit down to a barbecue dinner at 4:30 p.m. to prepare for the exciting Prize Melon Auction at 5 p.m. The biggest and best of the watermelon crop will be featured as growers take pride in their melons and bidders engage in a lively, friendly fight for the best of the crop.

McDade royalty will be recognized at 7:30 p.m. during the Queen’s Coronation. To conclude the activities, everyone will be treated to a free melon feast following the coronation.
