Giddings Buffs Advance to Regional Finals
The Giddings baseball, bidding for a second straight trip to the state baseball tourney, took a giant step this weekend with 8-2 and 7-1 wins over a fine Robstown team. The Buffs rode the pitching of their Division I signees, Trey Masek and Ty Marlow. Giddings is now 29-2 for the season. Robstown has a great baseball history winning the state championship twice in 4A (91 and 92) and losing in the finals to Carthage in 90. Giddings lost their only state championship game to the same Carthage team only in 3A.
Game 1- The Buffs got on the board in the top of the first inning. Masek walked, moved to second on a balk by the Robstown pitcher, and scored when Rush Plumlee’s hard grounder glanced off the shortstop’s glove into the outfield. Giddings nursed the one-run lead until the fourth inning. Masek got Giddings’ first hit on a line drive off the Robstown pitcher’s ribs. The pitcher stayed in the game but his effectiveness declined. Plumlee then send Masek home with a line drive triple to the right centerfield wall to give the Buffs a 2-0 lead. The Giddings lead expanded in the fifth with a couple of walks to Vinson Gonzales and Eric Escalante and Masek’s tworun double that went high into the night in San Marcos and was lost by the Robstown outfielders. Masek moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on Ty Marlow’s grounder to second.
Giddings was feeling pretty good with a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning when it was reduced by a two-run home run by Robstown to 5-2. After a scoreless sixth inning by both teams, Giddings put the game away with three runs in the top of the seventh. Escalante led off with a double, Brooks Marlow followed with a double to score Escalante. An intentional walk to Plumlee put two runners on for Giddings. The ploy failed as Mason Becker got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Phillip Fritsche singled home the final two runs for the Buffs. Masek did give up two singles in the bottom of the seventh after a strikeout of the lead off hitter. A line drive was snagged in left field by Gonzales and the last hitter grounded to Fritsche who threw him out at first.
Masek struck out 12 Cottonpickers but he had a good defense behind him as his pitching record improved to 12-0. Ty Marlow made a great play to end Robstown’s first inning. Marlow dove to field a ball in the hole between second and third. He rose to his knees and threw the ball to first just nipping the diving runner.
Game 2- The Buffs and Pickers battled scorelessly for the first four innings. Giddings got on the board with a run scoring double from Ty Marlow. Rush Plumlee reached to put two runners on for Mason Becker. A two-run double put the Buffs up 3-0. Giddings put four more runs up in the sixth as Fritsche again drove home two runs this time with a double. Masek and Plumlee followed with run scoring singles to give the Buffs a 7-0 lead going into the top of the seventh. Robstown was finally able to get a run in the seventh but it was too little, too late.
Marlow pitched a complete game as did Masek. Marlow gave up four hits in the win as he improved his pitching record to 9-0 for the season.
Giddings and Boerne will now face off for the Region IV title and a trip to the state baseball tourney. The site of those games will be determined.
